Day 1

Name: Clacket Lane Services, England
Location: 51.26981, 0.04011
Type: Wild camping
Cost: £0
Description: A surprisingly quiet and restful night considering I was at a motorway service station. Many motorway service stations display signs forbidding overnight stays. This one didn’t and it had plenty of parking well away from the road for any sized motorhome. Update 10th December 2016: I received an unpleasant reminder through the post last week. The letter informed me that parking overnight at motorway service stations is frowned upon in the UK. As an incentive to refrain from such anti social behaviour, I was fined £140. I won’t be parking there again.

Day 2

Name: Texaco Service Station, Gent, Belgium
Location: 51.03462, 3.63951
Type: Wild camping
Cost: £0
Description: Not the quietest night’s sleep I’ve ever had, but very handy all the same. I was at the end of a long day after a drive from Warwickshire, England, through the Channel Tunnel and then onwards to collect Cynthia from her rented house in Rottevalle. Many motorhome owners are unwilling to stop at motorway service stations but, sandwiched between two articulated lorries and bone tired, I was quite happy.

Day 3/4

Name: Camping Noorddorporweg, Heemskerk, Netherlands
Location: 52.52741, 4.65588
Type: Campsite
Cost: £44 for two nights including £10 for laundary
Description: More than we wanted to pay for a very basic site, but it suited our purposes. We spent two days trying to organise the Hymer after cramming all our joint possessions from the boat, Cynthia’s house in  Vermont, and Cynthia’s two month house rental in Rottevalle.

Day 5

Name: Small marina, Hinderloopen, Netherlands
Location: 52.93769, 5.40814
Type: Wild Camping
Cost: Free
Description: Our first taste of wild camping in rural Netherlands. We were actually parked on the marina car park. We expected to be moved on or at least charged for stopping for the night. We didn’t see anyone at all, apart from a German hire boater who was also looking for someone to pay. The location was very quiet and peaceful.

Day 6

Name: Sandfirden, Netherlands
Location: 52.98883, 5.52526
Type: Wild camping
Cost: Free
Description: This wonderful spot was another of Cynthia’s inspired discoveries. Her theory is that if you follow a little used dead end road, you’re going to have a peaceful night’s sleep. She was right, and we had a wonderful view of De Hop, the northern section of a large and picturesque lake.

Name: Eastermar
Location: 53.17576, 6.05458
Type: Aire
Cost: €10
Description: One of half a dozen marina-side parking bays. A quiet location next to the water, and one we hope to use to store both boat and Hymer when we aren’t using them.

Day 13

Name: Dwarsgracht
Location: 52.72118, 6.04425
Type: Wild Camping
Cost: Free
Description: We stopped here on our way to view a boat in Amsterdam. We wanted to stop next to the nearby town of Gierthoorn, the traffic free “Venice of the North”. Of course, because it was traffic free, there wasn’t anywhere for us to park. This spot was a very pleasant alternative next to a canal.

Day 14

Name: Castricam aan Zee
Location: 52.55526, 4.61065
Type: Wild Camping
Cost: €5 for car park entry
Description: This is a wonderful spot which is very popular with the Dutch. The car park has spaces for at least 1,000 vehicles. Even in the middle of the summer on an earlier visit, the car park was only half full, so there’s plenty of space for motorhomes. The beach is 200m away, as are a handful of very good beach restaurants. Highly recommended.

Name: Segorbe
Location: 39.848343, -0.481777

Description: Not the prettiest location in the world. The roadside bays are sandwiched between a railway station and a derelict graffiti covered building. A peaceful evening though with just two trains during the evening.

Day 48

Name: Vera
Location: 37.226718, -1.827825
Type: Aire
Cost: €9
Description: This is probably the poshest aire we’ve stayed at. There were thirty motorhomes on the aire when we arrived. At 8m long, we were the smallest there. The site is spacious and secure. The nearest beach is one of the top naturist locations in the world.

Day 49/50

Name: Malaga
Location: 36.729941, -4.427159
Type: Wild Camping
Cost: Free/£700 for a new bike
Description: One of very few places to wild camp in the city. It didn’t feel at all threatening, despite the graffiti and rubbish laying in the car park, but on the second day there we returned to the Hymer to find one of our lovely Dutch bikes missing. Avoid if possible!

Day 51/52

Name: Camping Malaga Monte Parc
Location: 36.652301, -4.609968
Type: Campsite
Cost: €16 per night plus electric
Description: A very peaceful campsite twenty minutes away from Malaga. Each pitch is between two substantial trees. Fortunately there weren’t many other motorhomes there. To get on and off our pitch, we had to use two other empty pitches – one opposite and one to the side of us – to get in and out. At 8m long, I don’t think we could have slotted ourselves onto the pitch if, as is the case in the summer, all the other pitches were occupied.

Day 53

Name: Urbanisacion la Alameda, Jaen
Location: 38.136624 -3.603299
Type: Wild Camping
Cost: Free
Description: We pulled up at a spot around the corner in the dark thinking we’d found a decent spot. Half an hour later, the police moved us on because we were blocking emergency services access along a narrow and overgrown lane. We were directed to another spot several metres away where we enjoyed a peaceful night’s sleep, apart from two dogs barkng in the grounds of a nearby gated villa.

Day 54

Name: San Rafael Del Rio
Location: 40.575532 0.393197
Type: Aire
Cost: €8, or free if you eat at the aire restaurant
Description: A decent, gated aire ten minutes away from the motorway. Friendly on site staff at the adjacent German restaurant.

Day 58/59

Name: Rennes-le-Chateau
Location: 42.926095, 2.263421
Type: Aire
Cost: Free
Description: This is a very basic aire. There are no facilities here other than a bin for general waste. The view more than makes up for it though. We were there in December, but enjoyed a day sitting in tee shirts in the sun watching the snow capped Pyrenees.

Day 61/62

Name: Narbonne
Location: 43.180719 3.023188
Type: Aire
Cost: €9 per night for parking plus €2 for water and black waste disposal
Description: We visited Narbonne to visit a large pet store, a camping caravan store and to visit an organic market on Satuday morning in the Place du Forum. This aire was the closest parking we could find from the city centre. It’s secure and well maintained. There is the traffic noise you would expect being in a city, but otherwise quite peaceful and felt very safe.
Blog post:

Day 63/64

Name: Anse de la Galère
Location: 43.143527, 2.998368
Type: Wild Camping
Cost: Free
Description: We spent far too long away from the sea. This was our first seaside overnight stop since two nights at Quend Plage six weeks earlier. It’s a peaceful spot just a few minutes from central Narbonne. Rubbish disposal is the only facility here. When we visited in mid December, there were half a dozen motorhomes parked in a space large enough for a hundred.

Name: Le Goulet Aire
Location: 42.912489, 3.018983
Type: Aire
Cost: €10.20 per night including all services
Description: A series of level terraces close to a beautiful lagoon. The aire was a little close to a busy road for our liking, but the view more than made up for the little road noise we could hear.

Day 80/81

Name: Lecuite
Location: 42.901033, 3.018571
Type: Wild Camping
